Farmshare was founded around a simple yet radical belief: that the power of the meat supply chain should rest in the hands of those who work tirelessly to cultivate and process our livestock.
Each year, thousands of independent family farms are lost to corporate consolidation. It’s no surprise so many struggle to survive, earning just $0.14 from every $1 spent on food in traditional retail channels. The rest is split between middlemen, including the big four meatpackers that control 85% of the market.
For too long, brokers and factories have restricted operations, stalled innovation, and siphoned the profits of hardworking American farmers. As the founder of farmshare, I see a different future – one where farmers and ranchers have access to the tools they need to maintain more control over their products and build direct relationships with their customers.
I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most dedicated and innovative livestock cultivators in the country. During the pandemic, I left San Francisco with my fiancée and moved to a cattle ranch in Montana – a spontaneous decision inspired by our obsession with the TV show Yellowstone.
Before and after my day job with Shopify and Stripe, I served as a ranch hand, rolling out hay bales on horseback, tagging cattle – the whole nine yards. I may not have grown up on a farm, but I believe deeply in protecting and rejuvenating our country’s food supply chains to ensure they are transparent, sustainable, and reliable.
In 2021 at the peak of supply chain interruptions, I began to imagine a better path from pasture to plate. I wondered, what if I could empower farmers, ranchers, and processors to cut out the middlemen and sell directly to consumers? With a little innovation and grit, could we increase efficiency, eliminate bottlenecks, and boost farm margins?
